Letter from Doug

Dear Friends and Family, The MRI result showed enhancement of the tumor adjacently on either side of the original tumor bed and a new growth in the corpus callosum. The surgeon, Dr. Blacklock, told me back in November that this is how new tumor would advance. Despite the MRI picture, Dr. Kew was impressed with my strength and suggested more radiation. We talked with Dr. Paulino. The same radiation doctor as back in September. He said that I would need target radiation at the new tumor site, involving 5 - 8 treatments over 2 weeks. And, a repeat of the IMRT radiation at the same left side where the original tumor has enhanced. This means another 25 - 30 treatments over a period of 5 - 6 weeks. Any or all of the treatments would more than likely leave me with more deficits and even the possibility of not being able to think. Dr. Paulino said that there is no right or wrong answer in deciding to undergo more radiation. I have decided to keep what normal brain function I have left and enjoy the rest of my life. Further enhancement of the tumor at the original site proves that the current chemo regimen is not working. We feel that this is truly in God's hands. And, for some reason, God wants me sooner. I will be safe and sound with my Granny and her sisters. May I ask you to know and increase awareness about Glioblastoma Multiforme. It’s not just “brain cancer”. There is usually no metastasis. This disease originates in the brain and likely kills you within 1 year. It is a death sentence. We have recently learned that it’s been more current within the past decade. Why? May I ask you to make it aware and know it. I have the worst and most aggressive tumor. Despite the gambit of chemo and radiation, the beast has shown its face again. No modern medicine can keep it at bay. Peggy and I are at home that we think of as paradise! I share peace in my decision not to continue with more radiation and the chemicals. Thank you for being a part of my life. We have shared many amazing times, places and life in general………. Together on God’s land and His ocean. -Doug
